Zenith Data Systems (Glenview, IL) is expected to announce a
new series of laptop computers today. The new laptops will
include a machine based on Intel's 386SX chip, as well as VGA
versions of Zenith's SupersPort and TurbosPort. In addition,
the company will announce a low-cost 386SX-based desktop
computer, sources at Zenith told Microbytes Daily.

The three new portable computers will include a battery-powered
version of the SupersPort featuring an Intel 386SX processor, a
new rapid-charge battery, a fluorescent-lit, page-white VGA
display, and hard disk drives as large as 100 megabytes. This
machine, known as the SupersPort SX, will be the first battery
powered laptop with these capabilities, and the first with the
386SX or the 100-megabyte drive. The battery will take a charge
in about 3 hours and will last about the same period of time,
the Zenith sources said. The computer weighs about 12 pounds;
with the battery pack clipped on, it weighs about 17 pounds.

The new SupersPort 286e will feature VGA-compatible video. The
hefty TurbosPort 386 will remain hefty, but it will also get
VGA video and a boost to 20 MHz. For the desktop, Zenith will
announce the Z-386SX, a low-cost (under $3000) machine that
resembles the current Z-286, which will continue to be shipped.

Zenith will begin shipping the two SX machines this month, the
SupersPort 286e in November, and the TurbosPort 386e in
December.
