NEW YORK (Microbytes Daily News Service) --- Unix International
and the Unix Software Division of AT&T have begun shipping a
developers' version of the new Unix System V Release 4, they
announced here yesterday at Unix Expo. The new release of the
operating system is most notable in that it supports three
graphical user interfaces: the X Window System, X11/NeWS, and
Open Look.

Unix International is a consortium of companies led by AT&T and
Sun Microsystems. Competing with Unix International is the Open
Software Foundation, whose members include IBM and DEC. The OSF
version of Unix uses a graphical user interface called OSF/Motif.

The new version of Unix is available now only to developers.
There was no official word on when end users might be able to
purchase copies of the new Unix. One person demonstrating Release
4 said it was "a bit shaky."

The new version of the operating system incorporates features
from several popular flavors of Unix, including Sun's SunOS,
Microsoft's Xenix, and the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD)
4.2 and 4.3 releases. At the Unix Expo today, a large number of
companies expressed support for the new operating system, among
them Commodore, Data General, Dell, Fujitsu, Intel, Lotus,
Motorola, NEC, and Toshiba.
