American Megatrends is demonstrating a pair of 80486 motherboards
at Comdex. The Gemini/486 and Voyager/486 are high-performance
motherboards in AT-size footprints. They're already available in
25-MHz versions and will ship with 33-MHz CPUs once those chips
become available, American Megatrends contends.

The Gemini/486 incorporates the 386 AT/33 base architecture with
the addition of a plug-in daughterboard which includes the 80486
CPU. As with the 386 AT/33, it comes standard with 4 megabytes of
RAM and it will support 8 megabytes of RAM on the motherboard and
another 8 megabytes with a plug-in memory module. Optional is an
8K-byte internal cache and support for up to 64K bytes of
external cache.

Other standards include no wait-state cache reads, an AMI
486-BIOS with built-in set-up and diagnostics software, one 8-bit
slot, six 16-bit slots, and a proprietary 32-bit slot that's also
compatible with 8-bit cards.

The Voyager/486 also includes 4 megabytes of RAM. It supports
burst mode functions and has an external cache twice the size of
the Gemini, at 128K bytes. It will also support up to 32
megabytes of RAM.

Price: Gemini/486, $4500; Voyager/486, $4900.
