US Air Force officials announced that Unisys Corp. (Blue Bell,
PA) has been awarded a requirements contract to provide the Air
Force with up to 500,000 AT-compatible microcomputers, along with
software and peripherals. The estimated value of this contract is
about $2 billion, making it the largest microcomputer purchase in
history.

Unisys has in the past remarketed personal computers manufactured
by Mitsubishi and by Intel. A Unisys source told Microbytes Daily
that computers sold under this contract will be manufactured in
the US.

Zenith Data Systems was considered by some industry observers to
have the inside track for the Desktop 3 contract landed by
Unisys. Zenith was awarded the Desktop Companion contract earlier
this month to provide supplies, upgrades, and peripherals; that
deal was valued at $500 million.
