Rational System's latest Instant-C, an incremental compiler for
the C language, uses the company's DOS extender technology to let
you compile and run protected-mode versions of applications that
can support up to 16 megabytes of memory, the company reports.

The Instant-C 4.0 environment runs exclusively in protected mode,
but the company says you can use the compiler's Mixed Mode
feature to run an application in real mode, allowing you run
larger programs. Mixed Mode also lets you compile an application
without having to worry about the restrictions on assembly and
object code that protected mode imposes.

Instant-C 4.0 includes a code browser, data inspection windows,
dynamic cross-referencing for functions or data, and automatic
generation of function prototypes, the company reports. The
compiler runs on the IBM PC AT with 1 megabyte.

Price: $795.
